Flaxseed is also nature’s richest source of compounds that may be its most potent disease-fighting weapon: lignans. Lignans are found in the cell walls of many plants, but in no other plant as abundantly as in flaxseed—it contains 15 times more lignans than pumpkin seeds, the next richest source, and hundreds of times more than most plants.
These lignans are potent antioxidants—even more potent than vitamin E, according to some studies. They protect against free radical damage that is at the root of many of our most devastating diseases. In addition, the molecular structure of lignans bears a striking resemblance to that of estrogen. Like soy isoflavones and other phytoestrogens, lignans bind to estrogen receptors in tissues throughout the body and protect against the harmful effects of stronger estrogens.
